Sometimes we forget the fundamentals, but the fundamentals have not changed, what changes are the results.
Sister Mary Kenneth Keller, the first person to earn a Ph.D. in computer science in the United States in 1963, said in one of her interviews that “We can make studies in artificial intelligence. Beyond that, this mechanism can be used to assist humans to learn.” And it is here that we will put emphasis on making use of “artificial intelligence” for the service of humans.
The digital era we are building, just like previous ones, is not one size fits all. To succeed organizations must combine human capabilities with digital tools, as has always been, because without the intelligence of the human being “artificial intelligence” cannot survive.
We continue to hear and read how “artificial intelligence” seems to enable and empower new business experiences to improve productivity, simplify work and create advantageous sustainable costs. We can create new tools with built-in AI algorithms, or we can simply pay for a lot of app subscriptions to try and achieve that productivity goal we hear so much about, but is that real or a mirage?
Going back to the fundamentals, but even further back from the fundamentals of a machine with “intelligence” we go to the divine fundamentals. <And God said, “Let us make man in Our image,
according to Our likeness.” (Gen 1:26) > It is thanks to this image and likeness that man is also endowed with intelligence and the capacity for understanding, reasoning, imagination, creation and freedom of decision. The day God created man, in God’s likeness He did it. (Gen 5:1)
But we must never think of ourselves to be equal to God, in the same way the “artificial intelligence” of the machine is not equal to the intelligence of man. Let us not be confused by comparisons between human intelligence and “artificial intelligence.” Let us remember that the divine intelligence who created us, is the one who gives us human intelligence to be able to create our own assistance of artificial help, directed towards the same purpose, so that everything created in this world helps us to reach heaven. <So God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female he created them. (Gen 1:27)>
And that is exactly what demonstrates the likeness and image to God in which man was created.
Sister Kenneth, in her unfinished book, “The Computer: A Humanistic Approach”, she described the computer as an idea processor. And this has been the case since its invention; “artificial intelligence” is a processor of ideas created by human beings and able to create new ideas on ideas already created.
Artificial intelligence does not have, nor will it ever have, the ability to be created in the image and likeness of God as man is (do not be offended women, it is correct to say man to refer to all humanity.) Only the human mind can imagine the unimagined.
“Seek therefore first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” (Mt 6:33) And so it has been in science since its beginnings. Science and faith have always gone hand in hand, science the hand of man, man full of faith, and faith, the hand of God. This is the history of humanity without hiding it or altering it with black legends.
This was demonstrated by Father Georges Lemaître with the origin of the universe and the big-bang theory, and famous for two works that are closely related and refer to the universe as a whole: the expansion of the universe, and its origin from a “primitive atom”. With the invention of television, the Venerable Archbishop Fulton Sheen, who will be beatified next September of this year, became one of the most important personalities in the United States, what we would now call an influencer, with more than 30 million viewers per week the broadcast of his TV series “Life Is Worth Living” evangelizing about the Truth of our faith in Christ Jesus. Also, how not to mention Mother Mary Angelica, founder of the television network EWTN TV.
Just as Sister Mary Kenneth Keller, Father Georges Lemaître, Archbishop Fulton Sheen, Sister Mary Angelica, and many other Christians who have sought God first and contributed to the world, society, and humanity, through Jesus Christ, in the same way, we can use the new technologies of our time to do the same.
